Intracoastal Canal Bridge Replacement
The LA 1 Intracoastal Bridge Replacement Project is a major infrastructure improvement initiative by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) aimed at replacing the aging bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway in West Baton Rouge Parish. This two-phase project will enhance safety, alleviate congestion, and provide improved access to I-10 and surrounding areas.
Project Overview
The existing southbound and northbound bridges, originally constructed in the 1960s, have exceeded their intended lifespan. The replacement project involves:
- Phase One: Construction of a new southbound bridge west of the existing structure, featuring three 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders. Realignment of Ernest Wilson Drive and LA 1 to seamlessly connect with the new bridge.
- Phase Two: Demolition of the original bridges and construction of a new northbound bridge with two 12-foot lanes, 10-foot shoulders, and a barrier-separated exit lane for I-10 eastbound.
Current Status
As of August 2024, construction crews are focusing on placing the bridge deck for the new southbound bridge. Progress is expected to continue through the fall, with a traffic shift onto the new structure anticipated in late 2024 or early 2025. The project is scheduled for completion by early 2026.
Why the Replacement is Needed
Key Benefits
- Improved Traffic Flow: The new bridges will increase capacity and reduce congestion along LA 1 and the Intracoastal Waterway corridor.
- Enhanced Safety: The existing bridges are outdated and rated below modern safety standards. The new structures will provide a safer, more efficient roadway.
- Economic Growth: By improving transportation efficiency, the project supports local industries, businesses, and regional economic development.
Traffic Management & Safety
The DOTD is committed to minimizing disruptions during construction:
- Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction, with only minimal temporary lane closures permitted between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m.
- Motorists are urged to remain alert, follow posted signs, and be mindful of construction crews working in the area.
Emergency & Evacuation Considerations
The new bridge structures will play a vital role in emergency and hurricane evacuation efforts for West Baton Rouge Parish. Improved capacity and structural integrity will ensure a reliable evacuation route during severe weather and emergencies.
Community Impact
The replacement of the Intracoastal Bridge is expected to enhance daily commutes, improve regional mobility, and provide long-term infrastructure improvements that will benefit both residents and businesses.
