2008 Calendar of Events
Celebrating 40 years of Preserving and Teaching West Baton Rouge Cultural Heritage
January 6 – March 30: Martin Luther King, Jr., Remembered: Photographs by Flip Schulke.
This exhibit is organized by the Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin. Award winning Photojournalist, Flip Schulke was close to Dr. King and created a portfolio of images documenting the late Dr. King as a father, husband, cleric, philosopher, orator and great leader. The exhibit includes 40 portraits of Martin Luther King, Jr. on exhibit during the 40th anniversary of his tragic death in 1968. This exhibit is made possible by a generous grant from the Dow Chemical Company.

March 29: Kite Workshop,
A family fun program. The program begins with a light talk, “Ben Franklin and his Legacy of Kite Flying” and fly a kite you make yourself with our visiting friend Ben Franklin. Free.
March 12: Dow Company Retiree Reunion
Invitation only.
March 16 – April 13: WBR Talented Art Student Show.
The annual student art show will be featured in the Whitehead Gallery. Opening reception March 16, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
April 10: Living History Day,
A day event for home school groups in the morning and public school fifth grades in the afternoon. Advance registration required.
April – October: 40th Anniversary of the West Baton Rouge Historical Association and the West Baton Rouge Museum.
A retrospective look at four decades of community involvement in collecting, preserving and learning about West Baton Rouge history and cultural heritage.
May 3 - July 21 - "Blending the Old and the New: Quilts by Paul D. Pilgrim "
on loan from the American Quilter's Society Museum, Paducah, KY.. This exhibit features 29 contemporary quilts made from quilt blocks that date from 1860 to around 1890. Mark your calendar for May 3rd to attend the reception for the exhibit opening.
May 31, 10:00 a.m. Lecture by Dr. Susan Roach, Documenting Lousiana's Quilts: Our Local American Art. Free.
May 1 and June 5: Zydeco Zoom.
This musical program engages children ages 3 to 5 years old in exploring the jazzy sounds of Mardi Gras and the tap, tap, tap of Zydeco rhythms. Music teachers and musicians engage children and their care givers in making music through song, dance and games. Free, advance registration requested.
June 2: Quilting Workshop.
Dr. Evva Wilson will lead the morning session on quilt block design, “Line and Design”. That afternoon, owner Amelia Beadle of Amelia’s Quilt Shop will lead a hands-on session on quilt construction using hand piecing techniques. She will also demonstrate machine piecing. $25 materials fee. Advance registration required. Call (225) 336-2422 ext. 14.
June: Blast From the Past History Day Camp
Sign up for the week-long day camp for children ages 6 – 12 featuring old fashioned chores, games, and crafts. This year’s theme will take on a patriotic twist as we jump into the spirit of election year where campers will campaign for their favorite historical characters, hold an election, and celebrate with an inaugural ball and all American treats like home-made ice cream, Cracker Jacks, and apple pie! Every Vote Counts: Election Year 2008 - A three-day program focusing on local, state, and national government, politics, and elections featuring guest speakers, field trips, interactive learning, catered lunches, 18 CLU credits, a $100 stipend, and classroom materials for in-service teachers. an exhibit on loan from the Rogers Historical Society.

Music in the Landry Courtyard and join our costumed staff as we trick or treat in each of the historic structures. Safe fun with a lot of laughter for everyone.

Opening Reception for the new permanent exhibit will serve as the venue for the 40th anniversary Gala for the WBRHA and Museum.
